Managing Stress: Effective Strategies for a Balanced and Healthier Life

In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become a part of life. Whether it’s related to work, family, or personal challenges, everyone experiences stress at some point. While a little bit of stress can motivate us to take action, chronic stress can take a toll on your physical and mental health, relationships, and overall well-being that is why it’s important to use stress management techniques like mindfulness, meditation, exercise and relaxation to reduce the effects of stress on your body. If you feel anxious or overwhelmed by stress, a therapist or healthcare provider can help.

What is Stress and the causes of it?

Stress is how we react when we feel under pressure or threatened. It usually happens when we are in a situation that we don’t feel we can manage or control. Because life involves constant change ranging from everyday, routine changes like commuting from home to work to adapting to major life changes like marriage, divorce, or death of a loved one, there is no avoiding stress.

Stress can come from many sources, which are known as a stressors because our experience of what is considered stressful is created by our unique perceptions of what we encounter in life, a situation may be perceived as stressful by one person and merely challenging by someone else. Certain situations tend to cause more stress in most people and can increase the risk of burnout. Many people are stressed by their job, personal relationships, financial issues and health problems. Learning skills to cope with these stressors can help reduce your experience of stress.

How does stress affect mental and Physical health?

Stress causes changes in the body that can range from mild to severe. Stress has a psychological impact that can manifest as irritability or aggression, a feeling of loss of control, insomnia, fatigue or exhaustion, sadness or tears, concentration or memory problems, or more. Continued stress can lead to other problems, such as depression, anxiety or burnout. Good stress management improves your quality of life and mental health.

Stress not only affects your mental health, but also your physical health. Your muscles tense, there is an increase in heart rate and breathing, short-term memory becomes more effective and prepares the body for ‘fight or flight’ when you sense danger. Stress intensity or frequency can be good or bad. In small doses, it can improve thinking skills and help you cope in situations where you need to perform, like during an exam. It can also improve your ability to think on your feet, like figuring out a way to solve a problem on the spot.

 Common Signs of Stress

The symptoms you experience when stressed can manifest in the way you think and how you feel emotionally. Stress can also show up physically or in your behavior. Because everyone experiences stress differently, symptoms may vary from person to person and range from mild to severe.

  • Physical: Headaches, muscle tension, fatigue, upset stomach, rapid heartbeat, sleep issues
  • Emotional: Irritability, anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, mood swings, sadness
  • Behavioral: Changes in appetite, increased alcohol/drug use, procrastination, social withdrawal
  • Cognitive: Racing thoughts, forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, negative thinking

What is Stress Management?

Everyone experiences stress at various times in their lives. It’s a normal reaction that occurs when you encounter changes or challenges. With the fast pace of work and home, being constantly inundated with technology and still wanting to have time to connect with those around you, life can feel overwhelming and stressful at times.

Here are some effective strategies to help you reduce and manage stress:

Use guided meditation.

Guided Meditation is a great way to distract yourself from the stress of day-to-day life. There are many guided meditations available online that can help you find five minutes of centered relaxation.

Practice deep breathing.

Deep breathing is a great way to reduce the activation of your sympathetic nervous system, which controls the body’s response of fight or flight to a perceived threat. Deep breaths taken in for a count of five seconds, held for two seconds and released for a count of five seconds, can help activate your parasympathetic nervous system to rest and digest, which helps reduce the overall stress and anxiety you may be experiencing.

Stay active and eat well.

Exercise and good nutrition play a key role in managing stress. A healthy body supports a healthy mind, and regular physical activity is a proven stress reliever that boosts your overall well-being. Nutrition is also vital, as stress can drain essential vitamins like A, B, C, and E. Eating a balanced diet not only helps your body feel better but also improves your mental health, making it easier to handle stress.

Manage social media time.

Spending time on social media sites can become stressful, not only by what you might see on them, but also because the time might best be spent enjoying visiting with friends, being outside enjoying the weather or reading a great book. In addition, many people use social media at night, which may worsen sleep due to increased stress at the exact time people are trying to wind down for the evening, resulting in fewer overall hours of quality sleep.

Connect with others.

Humans are social beings. You need to have connections with people to feel supported. Finding a sense of community, whether at work, with a religious organization or through shared activities, such as organized sports, is important to your well-being. Enjoying a shared activity allows you to find support and foster relationships that can be supportive in difficult times.

Talk with a therapist

If stress is affecting your life or relationships, a good therapist can help you find the appropriate treatment for your specific symptoms.

Consider looking for a therapist that integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy techniques into their practice. CBT is proven to help with anxiety, trauma, and depression.

How GenPsych Can Help

At GenPsych Facility, we understand the complexities of cognitive dissonance and its impact on mental health across different age groups. Our tailored services aim to support children, adolescents and adults in navigating their unique challenges. Here’s how we can help:

Children (Ages 8-12)

For younger children, cognitive dissonance often manifests in conflicts between their developing beliefs and their behaviors. GenPsych offers specialized therapy that focuses on:

  • Play Therapy: Using play as a therapeutic tool, we help children express their emotions and thoughts, allowing them to process the frustrations that often accompany ADHD.
  • Skill-Building: Our therapists work with children to develop coping strategies and emotional regulation skills, helping them manage impulsivity and improve focus.
  • Parental Involvement: We include parents in the therapeutic process, offering guidance on how to create a supportive environment for their child’s growth and success.

Adolescence (Ages 13+)

Adolescence is a critical time for identity formation, often leading to increased cognitive dissonance as teens navigate peer pressure, self-image, and personal beliefs. GenPsych’s approach includes:

  • Individual Therapy: Our therapists work closely with teens to develop personalized strategies for managing ADHD symptoms and improving daily functioning.
  • Group Therapy: We offer group sessions where teens can connect with peers facing similar challenges, creating a supportive environment to share experiences and coping strategies.
  • Academic Services: SilverGate Prep was created to provide personalized education for students in the Adolescent Program (GAP), ensuring they receive support from dedicated teachers while staying connected with their school district.
  • Life Skills Workshops: These workshops help teens build essential skills such as time management, organization, and stress management, which are crucial for academic and personal success.

Adults

For adults, cognitive dissonance can arise from various life transitions, relationships, or career changes. GenPsych provides:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This evidence-based approach helps adults with ADHD challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, improve focus, and enhance productivity.
  • Support Groups: Our support groups provide a space for adults to share experiences, learn from others, and develop strategies for managing ADHD in everyday life.
  • Holistic Approaches: We integrate mindfulness, stress management, and other holistic techniques to help adults manage the emotional and mental health challenges that accompany ADHD.

Testimonials From Our Patients

My whole experience at GenPsych was wonderful. The individual sessions with my therapist was my favorite experience at GenPsych. My therapist was able to get to know me just a little bit more and she was able to guide me every week on exactly what I needed to do in order to keep making progress.

I feel validated coming to this program/facility. I had reservations before starting being as I have never done treatment like this before, but I have been very pleasantly surprised to discover that it is nothing that I had dreamt up in my mind. I am learning that I am not alone and that my mental health can be treated and that I can one day live a much happier life.

The team really listened and have been helping us with a plan post discharge which has proven to be really beneficial. They care very much, are very attentive and responsive to our child's needs

The therapists are immensely helpful, and the techs are always willing to help you out. Everyone is really supportive. My favorite experiences are the helpfulness of therapists during groups and session to lead me in the right direction.

My therapist is wonderful she listen and give me great feedback and very helpful and understanding with all my heavy mental and health issues. I’m so happy I took the steps to get the help I needed and so happy to have found GenPsych.
